1 Gopher-First Feeds 2 ------------------ 3 Thu Nov 25 00:05:30 EST 2021 4 5 The original reason for this post was to follow up on 6 my previous post, "Adding a Feed for the Phlog" [1], in 7 which I discussed the decision to keep the Atom feed 8 itself only available on gopher (at the risk of limiting 9 the number of clients that can read it). I wanted to 10 broadcast that I've settled on sfeed(1) and sfeed_curses(1) 11 as a feed reader with gopher support (due to using 12 curl(1) as the default fetcher, which supports gopher). 13 14 As I wrote this though, I realized I observed something 15 more interesting to discuss about feeds--just like 16 gopher specifies the menu format as part of the protocol 17 (and thus makes all user interaction the same between 18 gopherholes), feed readers are able to present a 19 universal interface to many different blogs, which 20 is so cool. I know some people put a lot of effort into 21 their styling, but it's really enjoyable to read the 22 sfeed_content(1) dumps of the articles all from the 23 same client. Just like I know exactly what to expect 24 when I visit a gopherhole, each new feed item is 25 familiar in its presentation. 26 27 Maybe it's just me, but there's a bit of comfort in 28 browsing without surprises. 29 30 [1]: gopher://alexkarle.com/0/phlog/010.txt
